Writing Episodes, The Winnies, a Black Sheep Update, and Some Other Random Stuff for Your Enjoyment

I know it's been quiet the last two weeks on the blog, and I apologize for that - in my defense, I did write a very, very long post that is currently saved as a finished draft. There's a few more things I need to do before I feel I can publish it - I know that might not make a lot of sense now... but it will when you're older, "older" as in like a week or two from now (after it's posted).

A few quick updates - I have been writing, writing, writing for Episode 6, it's gone through many different ideas the last two months, and most of them have been 80% crap. But I'm happy with the structure I'm developing now...

I know I'm very behind on when I first planned on posting 6 and 7, but I didn't think I should just post "bleh" for the sake of being on time. Sometimes... I get writer's block.

Amanda and I attended The Winnies recently, here we are with Clintus, Bonny, and Mike Hedge.

And here I am (below) with our award from the super-awesome-amazing Ryanne Edit.

What Amanda and I thought was so perfect about getting our award from Ryanne, of all people, was that Ryanne was *the* video blogger who made me pick up a camera and just start talking to it. She's also the one who pushed me to attend the sessions Steve & Zadi were teaching at the Grove's Apple Store on vlogging. So much of the way Pedal has evolved can be traced back to my early IMs with Ryanne.

I received the best email from Olivier the other day, the Black Sheep have been busy with their own feature film since returning from Pedal. He posted a handful of stills in this cinematography forum, and even a link to some SD rushes that just look... fantastic! The kit that was used for their film, was the exact same kit and camera used during Pedal, pictured below.

Looking at these has made me so anxious and excited to begin importing all the footage from the trip. I love the picture this produces, and am taking their advice on which 35HDV-kit to purchase for the remaining interviews and pick-ups that will need to be shot over the remainder of post.

I just re-skimmed this post and realized it's all over the place, but that's how I feel tonight, so it's fitting.

I was excited to find out that my 1TB Raid Lacie drive (that I mentioned recently) is expected to arrive this Friday! I'm almost to point of being giddy just thinking about logging the footage... speaking of logging footage, does anyone reading have any tips on how to most-effectively log, organize, and file away 140+ hours of footage?

Hey Mike!

It's great to hear you are giddy about capturing the footage. I can't wait to see the next episode and maybe some stills too?

I'm sure you can find many books about logging footage, I would make sure to pick a method and stick with it for the whole project.

Also, remember what I said about backups. Please backup everything...

neat to see the post. thanks for the link. excited about logging!!!!

like Lan says, do it the same way the whole time...

since you lose date info when logging.. I would label everything like this:

Pedal 2007-06-21-06-23

if you have several hours all shot the same day, I might add some hour info too.

@Lan: I'll definitely will be posting lots of stills and raw clips as we are bringing everything in...

I've learned a lot of logging footage since working at NBC, but I'm also interested in "tagging" my footage properly... so I can find everything I need with Punakea or Spotlight...

And I know :) that's why I got a raid - it will be set to the safest mode ;)

@Mike: I like that naming structure, 99% of the tapes are labeled with the date, the tape # for that day and maybe a keyword here and there.
